Sign board flickering, patchy, or partly dark? Most LED sign board problems are fixable without replacing the whole unit. This guide covers the common issues, what causes them, and when a repair is enough versus when you need a new board — plus how to keep a healthy board healthy.
An LED sign board is a long-term fixture, not a one-time purchase — like any outdoor electrical fitting, it needs occasional attention to keep looking sharp and working reliably. Most of the issues below can be repaired on-site without remaking the board.
Usually caused by a failing LED driver/power supply unit, a loose wiring connection, or voltage fluctuation from the mains supply. Occasionally it signals an early-stage LED module failure. Fix: a driver replacement or wiring re-termination resolves most flickering — rarely needs the whole board redone.
Individual LEDs or a section of the LED strip has failed, often from water ingress or a manufacturing fault in cheaper modules. Fix: the affected module or strip can usually be replaced individually, as long as the acrylic/ACP body is still structurally sound.
LED modules from different batches or brands age at different rates, causing patches of the board to look dimmer or slightly different in colour temperature. Fix: replacing with matched, branded LED modules across the affected section restores even brightness.
Common in older boards or those with degraded silicone sealing, especially after heavy Bangalore monsoon rain. Left unaddressed, this causes corrosion on the driver and wiring. Fix: resealing the panel and drying out the interior — caught early, this is a straightforward repair; left too long, it can damage the driver.
Before assuming the worst, check the power supply/MCB and the timer switch if one is fitted — a surprising number of "dead board" calls turn out to be a tripped breaker or a timer set incorrectly. If power is confirmed reaching the board, the driver unit is the most likely failure point.
Switch off the power first. Wipe the acrylic or ACP surface with a soft microfibre cloth and a mild soap-water solution. Avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners, which can cloud acrylic over time, and never spray liquid directly into seams or vents where the LED modules and wiring sit. For hard-to-reach outdoor boards, a scheduled professional clean is safer than DIY, especially at height.
| Board Type | Recommended Check-up |
|---|---|
| Outdoor sign boards | Every 12 months — wiring, driver, sealing, surface clean |
| Indoor sign boards | Every 18–24 months |
| Digital / moving LED displays | Every 6–12 months — includes controller and connectivity check |
